Gonzalez Family Reunion

We just ¨happened¨ to be in Querétaro for the Gonzalez Family Reunion. This is was the 24th Gonzalada, as they call it. They say it was a small reunion with just 55 people as there have been some with over 150 in attendance.

Michael got to meet lots of Edith´s aunts, uncles and cousins as well as nieces and nephews.

We went to a Mariscos Sinaloa for the icebreaker. We mingled a bit and had a delicious dinner. Families introduced each family member and said where they came from.

On Saturday all the Gonzalez went to see a play in downtown. It was called Cholocate Independencia (Independence Chocolate). The play is about a director trying to film a hot cocoa commercial. The brand is Independencia so he ¨hires¨ these actors to represent the heroes of Independence for the ad. The actors keep re-enacting scenes from the independence and drive the director nuts. The children in the audience are asked to join the heroes in the re-enacting. Every so often one of the actors remembers that they are filming an ad, brings out a cup of hot cocoa and says: Chocolate Independencia. The children enjoyed being on stage. For the rest of the weekend there would be someone of the family that would suddenly get up and say: Chocolate Independencia and make us all laugh.

The family took a tour of the city on street cars. The tour guide pointed out some of the historical buildings and historical figures who lived/visited/did something in the city. We went back to the hotel and gathered around the swimming pool and garden. Most of the kids went swimming, some took naps, some ran and ran and some others talked and caught up. We surprised Michael with a cake and sang him ¨Happy Birthady¨ both in English and in Spanish.

On Sunday we gathered in front of a the Santa Rosa de Viterbo church for the official family picture and then went to mass. Afterwards we went back to the hotel and congregated in the garden by the pool. We got thank you gifts, the official photo and souvenirs. We got a diploma for travelling the farthest. Everyone, including the kids, got a diploma: for their role in Chocolate Independencia, for telling the most jokes, for attending for the first time, for driving the farthest, for being the youngest, etc., etc.

We had a good time catching up with people and getting to know the newer family members.
